Parcel delivery spans public postal systems, private carriers, retailers and cross-border exchanges. The statistics below distinguish observed company or government measures from estimates and forecasts, and identify the period and geography for each figure.

Global Parcel Delivery Scale and Cross-Border Trends
The Universal Postal Union’s historical comparison measures the reach of the international postal network, not the total private-carrier parcel market. In 2024, that network served 7.3 billion people, compared with 600 million in 1874, while international parcel volumes in 2019 were nearly 80 times their level at the start of the UPU.
The 2019 figure is a historical peak designation before the COVID-19 pandemic, not a current annual volume. The UPU also reports that parcel-post internationalization—the cross-border share of total postal volume—fell from a 7.3% peak in 1913 to 0.7% in 2024.
| UPU measure | Earlier reference | Later measurement | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| People served | 600 million in 1874 | 7.3 billion in 2024 | Global international postal network |
| International parcel exchanges | Baseline in 1874 | Nearly 80× baseline in 2019 | International postal exchanges |
| Parcel-post internationalization | 7.3% in 1913 | 0.7% in 2024 | Share of total postal volume |
| Letter-post internationalization | 5.5% in 1913 | 0.5% in 2024 | Comparator postal measure |
These measures should not be read as delivery-time or private-carrier indicators. The UPU’s 2024 Postal Development Index compares reliability, reach, relevance and resilience across 180 countries; the gap between the highest- and lowest-performing posts was 60 index points, which is not a delivery-time spread. The State of the Postal Sector 2024 supplies the historical and index measures.
U.S. USPS Parcel Volume, Revenue and Weight
USPS reports shipping-and-packages categories for fiscal years ending September 30. Its FY2024 table is unaudited and uses USPS-defined categories, so these figures are not a universal census of every U.S. parcel.
| USPS measure | FY2022 | FY2023 | FY2024 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shipping and packages volume | 7.232 billion pieces | 7.060 billion pieces | 7.252 billion pieces |
| Shipping and packages revenue | — | — | $32.260 billion |
| Shipping and packages weight | — | — | 14.356 billion pounds |
The service mix shows how different USPS categories contribute to the FY2024 total:
- Priority Mail accounted for 699 million pieces, $7.113 billion in revenue and 1.755 billion pounds.
- Parcel Select and Marketing Mail Parcels, a combined USPS category, accounted for 3.736 billion pieces, $10.536 billion in revenue and 8.834 billion pounds.
- Ground Advantage, launched in July 2023, recorded 2.313 billion pieces in its first full fiscal year in the table.
- Parcel Return Service recorded 58 million pieces, while Package Services recorded 425 million pieces.
- Priority Mail Express recorded 21 million pieces.
The category definitions matter: Parcel Select and Marketing Mail Parcels are combined in the USPS table, and Ground Advantage’s FY2024 figure follows its July 2023 launch. USPS Fiscal Year 2024 Annual Report to Congress is the source for these unaudited fiscal-year measures.
U.S. Carrier Parcel Volumes and Market Structure
The Pitney Bowes Parcel Shipping Index estimates the U.S. market using parcels tracked by its index. It estimated 22.37 billion U.S. shipments in 2024, up from 21.65 billion in 2023, with volume growth of 3.4%.
| U.S. parcel-market measure | 2023 | 2024 | Measurement note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parcel volume | 21.65 billion | 22.37 billion | Pitney Bowes estimate |
| Carrier revenue | $197.9 billion | $203.2 billion | Estimated carrier revenue |
| Average revenue per parcel | $9.10 | $9.09 | Index-derived measure |
Carrier revenue grew 2.7% in 2024, while revenue per parcel fell 0.6%. These are market measures, not necessarily the price paid by a shipper for each parcel.
The same index estimated 710 parcels per U.S. household and 66 parcels per person in 2024. Its carrier estimates were 6.3 billion parcels for Amazon Logistics, 6.9 billion for USPS, 4.7 billion for UPS, 3.9 billion for FedEx and 0.78 billion for smaller carriers.
Amazon Logistics volume grew 7.3% year over year, and the smaller-carrier residual category grew 22.6%. Because the index’s scope and definitions differ from company filings and USPS categories, these figures should not be directly reconciled with the other sections. Parcel Shipping Index Report 2024 provides the estimates and forecast framework.
FedEx Ground Delivery Trends and Yields
FedEx’s FY2024 statistical book covers the year ended May 31, 2024. Its operating-day conventions differ by service: Ground Commercial uses a five-day-per-week basis, while Home Delivery and Economy use seven-day averages.
| FedEx Ground service | FY2024 average daily volume | Year-over-year change | Operating-day basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total Ground | 9.234 million packages | 0.8% growth | Service-specific total |
| Commercial | 4.483 million packages | 2.8% growth | Five days per week |
| Home Delivery | 3.941 million packages | 2.0% decline | Seven days per week |
| Economy | 810,000 packages | 3.7% growth | Seven days per week |
FedEx Ground reported a $11.86 yield per package in FY2024. Yield is a company measure of revenue per package, not a posted consumer rate.
FedEx Ground operated 256 commercial days and 360 Home Delivery/Economy days during FY2024. The different calendars mean that average daily volumes should be compared with care across services. FedEx Q4 FY24 Statistical Book reports these volumes, growth rates, yield and operating days.
Amazon Delivery Speed and Network Performance
Amazon’s company statements emphasize units and orders rather than carrier-defined parcels. Globally, Amazon delivered more than 7 billion same- or next-day Prime units in 2023, including more than 4 billion in the United States and more than 2 billion in Europe.
In Q4 2023, Amazon shipped nearly 600 million more items from in-region U.S. fulfillment centers year over year. It also reported that U.S. same-day or overnight items increased by more than 65% year over year in that quarter.
Network expansion and distance measures included:
- Amazon added nine dedicated same-day delivery sites in the United States during 2023.
- Same-day delivery expanded to 18 additional U.S. cities during 2023.
- Amazon had more than 55 dedicated same-day delivery sites across the United States by early 2024.
- The average package distance in Amazon’s European middle-mile network was 25 kilometers shorter in 2023 than in 2022.
- More than 70% of Prime member orders in the United Kingdom arrived the same day or next day in Q4 2023.
These figures describe Amazon’s reported items, orders, facilities and network measures, so they are not equivalent to the Pitney Bowes carrier parcel estimates. Amazon delivered to Prime members at the fastest speeds ever in 2023—and is working to get even faster in 2024 provides the company-reported results.
Parcel Density, Pricing and Forecasts
Parcel density and pricing indicators show both scale and the limits of comparison. The Pitney Bowes index estimated 66 parcels per person and 710 per household in the United States in 2024, while average parcel revenue was $9.09, down from $9.10 in 2023.
Its global outlook forecasts 225 billion parcels in 2028 and a 6% compound annual growth rate from 2023 to 2028. The forecast also puts Amazon at 8.4 billion U.S. parcels and USPS at 8.3 billion in 2028; both are modeled future estimates, not observed totals.
UPS provides a separate company-reported global reference point for calendar 2024: it delivered an average of 22.4 million packages per day and 5.7 billion packages during the year. UPS reported $91.11 billion in total revenue, but that is consolidated company revenue rather than parcel-only revenue.
| Measure | Period | Figure | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global parcel volume forecast | 2028 | 225 billion parcels | Pitney Bowes index market |
| Global parcel-volume forecast | 2023–2028 | 6% CAGR | Pitney Bowes modeled path |
| UPS packages delivered | 2024 | 5.7 billion packages | Global UPS operations |
| UPS average daily packages | 2024 | 22.4 million packages | Global UPS operations |
| UPS total revenue | 2024 | $91.11 billion | Consolidated company revenue |
The forecast figures are not observations, and UPS’s global company measures use a different reporting scope. Parcel Shipping Index Report 2024 supports the forecasts, while UPS 2024 GRI Report reports UPS’s calendar-year global measures.
