53 Automotive Aftermarket Statistics on Sales, Stores, Labor and Parts

Automotive aftermarket statistics span retailers, parts suppliers, repair businesses and the workers who keep vehicles operating after sale. The figures below make geography, period, population and measurement definition explicit, because company results are not the same as a total-market estimate.

Automotive Aftermarket Sales and Industry Scale Statistics

Company filings provide useful operating benchmarks, but they should not be added together as a market total. O’Reilly’s 2024 result covers a multi-country retailer, while LKQ’s result covers global operations and includes recycling, self-service and specialty activities.

Company or measure Period and geography Reported result
O’Reilly sales Year ended Dec. 31, 2024; United States, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Canada $16.708 billion, up $896 million or 6% from 2023
O’Reilly gross profit 2024; consolidated operations $8.55 billion, or 51.2% of sales
LKQ total revenue Year ended Dec. 31, 2024; global operations $14.355 billion
LKQ parts and services 2024; global operations $13.718 billion, or 95.6% of consolidated revenue

O’Reilly also reported operating income equal to 19.5% of sales and net income equal to 14.3% of sales in 2024. These are accounting margins for one retailer, not industry-wide aftermarket margins.

LKQ’s parts-and-services revenue increased $544 million, or 4.1%, in 2024, but its company-defined organic result declined 2.2%; acquisitions and divestitures contributed 6.3% to the revenue change. The two measures describe LKQ’s corporate performance and should not be read as a pure estimate of market demand.

The U.S. Census Bureau offers broader context: estimated revenue for the Repair and Maintenance subsector, NAICS 811, increased 13.5% in 2022 versus 2021. That subsector includes automotive and non-automotive repair and maintenance, so it is not a pure automotive-aftermarket market-size statistic.

Store counts show the physical scale of major parts retailers, but they measure company networks rather than the full population of repair facilities or independent stores.

Retailer Measurement date Store network
O’Reilly Dec. 31, 2024 6,265 U.S. and Puerto Rico; 87 Mexico; 26 Canada
AutoZone Fiscal year ended Aug. 31, 2024 6,432 U.S.; 794 Mexico; 127 Brazil
Advance Auto Parts Dec. 28, 2024 4,507 Advance stores; 281 Carquest stores

O’Reilly opened 198 net new stores in 2024. Its comparable-store sales rose 2.9% in 2024 for U.S. stores open at least one year, compared with 7.9% in 2023; the company reported 32 consecutive years of comparable-store sales increases through 2024.

O’Reilly’s comparable-store definition excludes specialty machinery, independent-parts-store sales, employee sales and Leap Day, while including online orders for qualifying stores. That definition matters when comparing the measure with other retailers.

AutoZone had commercial sales programs in 5,898 domestic stores at the end of fiscal 2024. Advance opened 42 stores and closed 40 in 2024, for a net increase of two stores.

Advance also announced a restructuring plan on November 14, 2024, targeting reductions of approximately 500 stores, about 200 independent locations and four distribution centers by mid-2025. This is a planned reduction, not a completed result.

Professional and DIY Automotive Aftermarket Customer Mix

Professional and do-it-yourself demand is not reported with one uniform industry definition. Advance’s professional-sales percentage excludes Worldpac and independent retailers, so it describes the company’s defined continuing operations rather than every professional purchase in the aftermarket.

Advance reported professional sales at approximately 50% of sales in 2024, 2023 and 2022 under that definition. Its Advance-branded stores carried approximately 23,600 SKUs on a custom market mix at December 28, 2024, while Carquest stores carried approximately 16,400 SKUs.

The company also reported 934 independently owned stores operating under the Carquest name at that date. These independent locations are separate from the 4,788 Advance and Carquest stores in the company-operated network reported above.

Automotive Repair and Maintenance Employment Statistics

The Bureau of Labor Statistics CES series measures annual-average production and nonsupervisory payroll employees, not all automotive workers and not every independent repair business. NAICS 8111 covers automotive repair and maintenance, with narrower categories below it.

U.S. BLS category Annual average, 2024 Population measured
Automotive repair and maintenance, NAICS 8111 830.3 thousand Production and nonsupervisory employees
General automotive repair, NAICS 811111 309.0 thousand Production and nonsupervisory employees
Automotive mechanical and electrical repair, NAICS 81111 332.3 thousand Production and nonsupervisory employees
Body, paint, interior and glass repair, NAICS 81112 246.1 thousand Production and nonsupervisory employees
Other automotive repair and maintenance, NAICS 81119 244.6 thousand Production and nonsupervisory employees

Source: BLS Table B-6b: Employment of production and nonsupervisory employees by industry sector.

For historical context, automotive mechanical and electrical repair had 339.6 thousand production and nonsupervisory employees in 2020, compared with 332.3 thousand in 2024. The figures use the same BLS employee definition and annual-average basis.

Two additional categories show why the top-line total includes varied services: car washes had 162.8 thousand employees in 2024, while oil-change, lubrication and other automotive repair had 81.8 thousand. Both are within the cited automotive repair and maintenance scope, but car washes are distinct from repair shops.

BLS earnings figures provide industry averages for production and nonsupervisory employees, not technician-specific compensation. They are useful for comparing segments, but they do not describe every role or independent business.

U.S. BLS category Average hourly earnings, 2024 Average weekly earnings, 2024
Automotive repair and maintenance, NAICS 8111 $26.15 $933.56
General automotive repair, NAICS 811111 $28.95 $1,131.95
Automotive mechanical and electrical repair, NAICS 81111 $28.76 $1,115.89
Body, paint, interior and glass repair, NAICS 81112 $26.50 Not listed in the supplied measure
Car washes, NAICS 811192 Not listed in the supplied measure $475.75
Oil-change, lubrication and other automotive repair $24.46 Not listed in the supplied measure

The comparison is not a ranking of occupations. Each figure is an industry-average measure with its own NAICS scope, and missing cells reflect that the cited measure supplied only hourly or weekly earnings for that category.

Replacement, Recycled-Parts and Aftermarket Business Performance

LKQ’s segment data separates the effect of acquisitions from the underlying performance of its Wholesale-North America business. Revenue rose 9.9% to $5.465 billion in 2024, while acquisition-related revenue contribution was $779 million, or 15.7%, and company-defined organic revenue decreased $278 million, or 5.6%; the per-day organic decline was 6.3%.

LKQ reported a 43.6% gross margin for Wholesale-North America in 2024, down from 47.0% in 2023. The segment includes aftermarket and salvage operations, and the margin is not a product-level margin.

AutoZone’s later trailing-period measures provide a separate view of retail productivity. In the trailing four quarters ended May 10, 2025, sales per average store were $2.514 million and sales per average square foot were $373 across its domestic, Mexico and Brazil stores.

During that same trailing four-quarter period, AutoZone auto-parts sales were $18.545 billion, up 5.1% year over year. Domestic commercial sales were $5.113 billion, up 8.3% year over year, while domestic commercial sales in the 12 weeks ended May 10, 2025 were $1.270 billion, up 10.7% from the comparable 12-week period.

These AutoZone figures are trailing-period company measures, not a calendar-year market total. They also use a later period than the fiscal-2024 store counts, so the dates should remain separate when interpreting retail scale and productivity.

Finally, the BLS women-on-payroll series reported that women represented 18.3% of automotive repair and maintenance employment in 2024 and 20.0% of automotive body, paint, interior and glass repair employment. Those percentages describe the BLS payroll population, not all automotive aftermarket employment.
