56 Vehicle Accessory Industry Statistics: Market Scale, Trends and Consumer Costs

Vehicle accessory industry statistics span retail stores, aftermarket suppliers, vehicle use and accessory-adjacent household costs. In the United States, the 2023 automotive parts and accessories store category reported $84.377 billion in sales, shipments or revenue, while major retailers and suppliers reported billions more in company-level sales across broader product mixes.

U.S. Vehicle Accessory Industry Market Scale and Business Activity

The closest official broad measure is the U.S. Census Bureau’s NAICS 441310 category, “automotive parts and accessories stores.” It covers employer firms in the store category, not every manufacturer, installer, online seller or nonemployer business.

Measure 2023 result Population and unit
Sales, shipments or revenue $84,377,099,000 U.S. NAICS 441310 employer firms
Annual payroll $12,520,337,000 U.S. NAICS 441310 employer firms
Employees 3,075,444 U.S. NAICS 441310 employer firms

These Census figures describe store-category operating activity rather than accessory-only wages or sales. They are therefore useful for industry scale, but they should not be treated as a complete valuation of the entire vehicle-accessory ecosystem.

Company filings show how broad aftermarket businesses sit inside that scale. AutoZone reported $18.5 billion in fiscal 2024 net sales, up 5.9% from fiscal 2023, together with $3.8 billion in operating profit, up 9.1%, and $2.7 billion in net income, up 5.3%.

AutoZone’s figures include replacement parts, maintenance items, accessories and non-automotive products. Standard Motor Products reported $1.463849 billion in 2024 net sales across its disclosed product groups, compared with $1.358272 billion in 2023 and $1.371815 billion in 2022; that series combines aftermarket and engineered solutions.

Vehicle use and fleet age provide demand context for parts and accessories, but neither measure direct accessory adoption. O’Reilly’s 2024 filing cites approximately 3 trillion U.S. vehicle-miles per year as an industry-scale estimate.

Demand-context measure Period Result
Total U.S. vehicle miles traveled 2022 +0.9%
Total U.S. vehicle miles traveled 2023 +2.1%
U.S. vehicle miles traveled January–November 2024 +1.0%
U.S. light-vehicle fleet End of 2023 284 million
Registered vehicles 2013–2023 +14.2%

The travel figures are based on U.S. Department of Transportation data cited by O’Reilly and are not accessory-sales measures. The November 2024 figure is partial-year, while the 2024 light-vehicle sales measure is an approximate seasonally adjusted annual rate of 16.8 million vehicles, not an exact single-month or necessarily final calendar-year total.

The replacement environment also reflects vehicle longevity. U.S. vehicle scrappage rates ranged from 4.1% to 5.7% annually from 2013 through 2023, while average vehicle age rose 10.6%, from 11.3 years in 2013 to 12.5 years in 2023.

AutoZone Vehicle Accessory Retail Statistics

AutoZone’s fiscal year ended August 31, 2024, provides a detailed view of one large retailer’s physical footprint and operating capacity. The company operated 6,432 U.S. stores, 794 stores in Mexico and 127 stores in Brazil, for a global network of 7,353 locations at fiscal year end.

  • AutoZone added 213 net stores in fiscal 2024, reflecting 217 openings and 4 closures.
  • The company had 5,898 domestic commercial sales programs at fiscal 2024 year end, up from 5,007 in fiscal 2020.
  • Average store inventory was $837,000 in fiscal 2024, compared with $683,000 in fiscal 2020.
  • Total store square footage was 49.417 million square feet in fiscal 2024.
  • Average store size was 6,721 square feet in fiscal 2024.

A commercial sales program is not a count of unique customers or sales volume, and inventory and square-footage measures include the company’s broad assortment. The network statistics consequently describe AutoZone’s retail infrastructure, not an industry-wide store-growth rate or accessory-only inventory.

O’Reilly Aftermarket Sales and Margin Data

O’Reilly’s calendar 2024 results combine parts, maintenance items, accessories, equipment and related products. Sales reached $16.71 billion, up 6% from $15.81 billion in 2023, while comparable-store sales increased 2.9% in 2024 and 7.9% in 2023.

O’Reilly measure 2024 result Definition or scope
Sales $16.71 billion Consolidated operations
Comparable-store sales +2.9% U.S. stores open at least one year
Gross profit $8.55 billion; 51.2% Consolidated operations
SG&A expense $5.30 billion; 31.7% Consolidated operations
Operating income $3.25 billion; 19.5% Consolidated operations
Net income $2.39 billion; 14.3% Consolidated operations

The comparable-store definition excludes specialty machinery, independent-parts-store sales, employee sales and the 2024 leap day, while including online sales. O’Reilly opened 198 net new stores in 2024 and began operating 23 Canadian stores through the Vast Auto acquisition; the 23-store addition was acquisition-based rather than organic openings.

Vehicle Accessory Categories and Customer Concentration

Product-category figures show why company revenue should not be read as accessory-only demand. AutoZone reported that failure and maintenance categories represented approximately 86% of fiscal 2024 sales, with the remaining mix including discretionary and other categories; the filing does not identify accessories alone.

Standard Motor Products’ 2024 disclosed categories were broader than consumer accessories:

Product group 2024 sales
Engine Management $467.460 million
Electrical and Safety $229.361 million
Wire Sets and Other $65.739 million
AC System Components $274.926 million
Commercial Vehicle engineered solutions $89.171 million
Light Vehicle engineered solutions $91.548 million

The supplier’s customer base was concentrated. O’Reilly Auto Parts represented 28.4% of Standard Motor Products’ 2024 consolidated net sales, AutoZone represented 18.8% and NAPA represented 13.5%; the three largest individual customers together represented approximately 60.7%.

Those percentages measure supplier customer concentration, not O’Reilly, AutoZone or NAPA market share. Engineered-solutions sales serve vehicle and equipment manufacturers and should not be relabeled as consumer accessory purchases.

Consumer Vehicle Spending and Accessory-Adjacent Costs

The Bureau of Labor Statistics provides a consumer-spending lens, but its 2023 table is stratified by military status. The figures below retain the source’s first and second listed consumer-unit groups rather than presenting either column as a national all-consumer-unit average.

BLS 2023 measure First listed consumer-unit group Second listed consumer-unit group
Other vehicle expenses $3,845 $4,146
Vehicle finance charges $361 Not reported in supplied figure
Maintenance and repairs $975 $1,127
Vehicle rental, leases, licenses and other charges $734 Not reported in supplied figure
Vehicle insurance $1,775 $1,937

The table’s categories are broader than accessory purchases. In particular, maintenance and repairs, insurance, finance charges and licensing cannot be converted into accessory spending without additional evidence.

The first listed consumer-unit group recorded $975 in mean annual maintenance and repairs spending in 2023, while the second listed group recorded $1,127. Other vehicle expenses were $3,845 and $4,146 respectively, and vehicle insurance was $1,775 and $1,937.
